Chapter Four
It had been two full weeks since Jamie woke from a deep sleep to find an iPod on the nightstand with a note in Diegoâs impressively legible scrawl. Heâd left his number and begged her to use it soon. Sheâd programmed it into her cell but had yet to finalize a call to the number. She was terrified of making that phone call, and quite honestly refused to. She was certain that after heâd gotten what he wanted from her, she would never hear from him again.
Her girlfriends at the office wanted all the sordid details, but her lips were sealed. What had happened in those final hours with him was burned into her memory. Having him measure her, placing his hands against her bare skin, and telling her she was fucking perfect. Not just perfect, fucking perfect. To her those words meant more than he could possibly know.
The time spent in the previous fourteen days was simply back to the daily grind. She was back to the prim Jamie Monroe, secretary for Bristol Carter, black-rimmed glasses perched on her tiny nose, red hair pulled back into a tight clip. In that exact moment, she ran a capped pen through the strands, back toward the clip alongside her head, and sighed softly as she tried desperately to listen to the irate jerk on the other end of the phone.
âMr. Lester, I apologize, but I called the Magistrateâs office this morning. There is no way I can reschedule that for you. Theyâre backed up with domestic dispute cases, and the fact that your mother wonât hand over your fifty-year-old truck isnât priority over cases involving children. That and Bristol has court on three different cases on Thursday and cannot possibly handle a fourth.â She muted her end of the phone as she let out a groan once the middle-aged man began screaming in her ear for a fifth time since sheâd answered the phone. She waited until heâd once again asked her what he was supposed to do before flipping the mute off. âI can transfer you to Bristolâs voice mail and have him call you back, but thatâs all I can personally do for you, Mr. Lester.â Another sigh escaped as she released the call into Bristolâs voice mail, which had to be full by then.
Her boss had been gone all morning, and his clients were getting more and more irate by the hour. Jamie shifted through papers she needed to give to Mr. Carter once he got back, ordering them from the most important to the least in a stack before turning her attention to the college brochure sitting in her desk drawer. The urge to head off to school and forget this job ever existed was looking better and better.
Diego had told her in those last hours before she left the hotel that her dreams were the most important thing that she had. âIf you canât follow your dreams, beautiful, what kind of a life will you
